Rorschwihr’s Silberberg wine-growing terroir is characterised by its particular geological conditions, which influence the type of soil and microclimate in the region. These factors have a significant impact on the character and quality of the grapes grown in the region.

LIEU-DIT SILBERBERG DE RORSCHWIHR

On the heights of Rorschwihr.

Originally developed by the Convent of Moyenmoutier and the Silo of Sélestat in 1348, the Silberberg vineyard has a long history. The terrier of the church of Rodern, renewed in 1531, confirms that the wines from this vineyard were considered noble by the inhabitants of Rodern. The name “Montagne d’Argent” (Silver Mountain) comes from the soil of the Oberer Silberberg, composed of silicified Muschelkalk bordering the two-mica granite soils of Thannenkirch.

In 1990, the Syndicat Viticole de Rorschwihr decided to divide the Silberberg into two distinct parts: the Silberberg and the Oberer Silberberg, due to the presence of different soil types.

The silver hill.

“Silberberg” literally translates as “silver mountain” in German. The precise origin of this name is not always clear, but it may be linked to characteristics of the soil, rock or other distinctive features of the region.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES PRESENT

Land of Riesling.

Riesling plays a dominant role, accounting for 85% of all the grape varieties planted. This emblematic grape gives the wines a distinctive elegance, characterised by refined aromas and lively acidity.

Pinot Gris also flourishes here, accounting for 5% of the plantation. This variety contributes to the overall structure of the wines, giving them a subtle roundness and complex fruity notes.

Gewurztraminer, with its distinctive aromatic signature, completes the blend with an equivalent share of 5% on this terroir.
