Alsace’s terroirs, rich in history and diversity, are the source of our inspiration, giving birth to wines that reveal the true essence of our region. In every glass, our exceptional terroirs tell a profound and captivating story, a story that finds its genesis in the earth itself.

LOCAL CULTURE

A rich, concentrated vineyard.

Our 245-hectare vineyard is concentrated 5km north and 8km south of the village of Ribeauvillé. Situated on a major geological fault, it offers a wide variety of soils.

Every 300 metres, the type of terroir varies. From granite to limestone, clay to sandstone, the imprint of terroir gives Cave wines an extra soul, a touch that’s both singular and complex. Each wine captures the very essence of the terroir where the grapes were grown, offering a unique and authentic taste experience.

JEWEL OF THE VINEYARD

Clos du Zahnacker.

A legendary parcel with a strong history, Clos du Zahnacker has been owned in turn by swordsmen and churchmen. It was a monk-knight named Martin Zahn who, owning this enclosed plot in the 8th century, gave it its name: Clos du “Zahn Acker”, meaning “Zahn’s Garden” in French.

In 1965, Clos du Zahnacker became the exclusive property of the Cave de Ribeauvillé.

A BIT OF HISTORY

The AOC d'Alsace.

Alsace wines have had an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) since 1962. However, they benefit from a precious heritage and a winemaking tradition that goes back centuries. The first traces of vines in the region date back to Roman times, attesting to the longevity of our commitment to viticulture. Alsace’s seven emblematic grape varieties, including Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Gris, have been carefully cultivated on our hillsides for generations, benefiting from a rich terroir and unique microclimate.

Since 1975, the Alsace Grand Cru appellation has distinguished exceptional terroirs that produce grapes of exceptional quality. By 2007, 51 lieux dits had been progressively classified as Grands Crus, with plot sizes ranging from 3 to 80 hectares. These vineyards are delimited according to strict geological and climatic criteria, creating the mosaic of Alsace’s Grands Crus. The wines made from them account for around 5% of production.
