Clos du Zahnacker.

The oldest written records trace the origins of Clos du Zahnacker back to the 8th century, when Benedictine monks divided their time between prayer and working the land.

The Zahnacker is later traced in the history of the Lords of Ribeaupierre. It was still talked about during the wars that bloodied the Middle Ages, when the Clos became the focus of quarrels between rival factions.

Later, local tradition has it that the Sun King himself appreciated this wine. Indeed, French history mentions that Louis XIV stopped off in Ribeauvillé and tasted the Clos du Zahnacker wine in a hanap piously preserved at Ribeauvillé town hall.

In 2002, the Cave de Ribeauvillé commissioned artist Christian Lapie to erect 7 groups of 3 statues around the Clos.

Made from charred oak, these twenty-one pure silhouettes are immersed in an eternal vigil. They bring back to life all those who, through the generations, have contributed to making this vineyard a mystical hymn.
