BETWEEN IDENTITY AND WEALTH
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Alsace region was already renowned for its wines, but there were no strict regulations to guarantee their origin and quality. It was in 1927 that the first Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in Alsace were defined, making Alsace one of the first French wine regions to establish an official classification system. This has helped to promote recognition of Alsatian grape varieties and protect the identity of the region’s wines.
One of the most distinctive features of Alsatian wines is the use of the name of the grape variety on the label, a practice that was rare in France at the time. This enabled consumers to know the main grape variety of the wine, making it easier to understand and promote Alsace wines.
Over the decades, Alsace’s AOC have evolved to include a number of specific grape varieties, the most famous of which are Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Muscat and Pinot Noir for red wines. Each of these Alsatian grape varieties has its own character and particularities, which has enabled the region to produce a varied range of wines, from dry to sweet, white to red.
